Trees over the roof, embers both directions, and paperwork your insurer will actually read.
Everywhere else on our patch, a spark arrestor is prudent. Up the Pine River valley, with ponderosa closing over the roofline and duff on the ground under it, it is the specific piece of hardware standing between your flue and the fuel around your house. This valley has watched fire come down these ridges, and nobody living here needs the point laboured.
What is worth saying is that it works in both directions and the inbound direction is the one people forget. An open flue under trees fills with needles and cones over a summer. That is a blockage, it is a fire load inside the chimney, and it is sitting directly above a firebox somebody is about to light in October.
Since 1 July 2026, a Colorado insurer that uses a wildfire risk model to price, underwrite or decline to renew your policy must disclose your risk score to you in writing each year, and must take account of the mitigation you have actually completed. La Plata County has separately adopted the state's 2025 Wildfire Resiliency Code. Non-renewals across Colorado rose 77 percent between 2018 and 2023 and have kept going.
The operative word in all of that is "completed". A carrier cannot credit work it has no record of, and a homeowner's recollection is not a record. So the deliverable on this job is not only the cap - it is dated photographs of the flue before and after, a note of the hardware fitted and the mesh aperture, and the address it was fitted at, in a form you can forward.
We will not tell you what that is worth on your premium, because we cannot see your carrier's model and anyone who claims otherwise is inventing it. We will tell you that undocumented mitigation is worth nothing at all.
Cap work on a forest-edge house is also the best opportunity to look at the things around it - needles in the roof valleys, duff against the foundation, branches over the flue. None of that is chimney work and we do not charge for mentioning it. We are on the roof anyway, and it is the cheapest part of the list.
Tell us the appliance and how it is used. You get a firm number before anyone starts.
Get a Free QuoteDated before-and-after photographs of the flue and cap, a written note of the hardware and mesh fitted, and the service address. Plain, factual, forwardable. We do not write anything that characterises your risk - that is your carrier's job.
It solves embers and debris entering. It does not solve a branch over a flue, which is a clearance problem and a draft problem both. We will flag the ones that matter and leave the cutting to an arborist.
Give us the basics and we will come back with a firm price and a date.
